While we dream of a winter with snow globe–like flurries and fresh, crisp air, we Canadians know that winter wonderlands are actually more like scenes from the movie Trains, Planes and Automobiles.
The Dream:
Our Reality:
With biting winds, icy rain pellets, sub-zero temperatures and the dry indoor heat, winter sure can wreak havoc on our skin. Even Steve Martin would think winter skin dilemmas are no laughing matter. Here’s our best advice to keeping skin in tip-top shape, no matter what winter throws our way.
Drink Up:
In summer’s heat, it’s easy to remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, but in winter months it is less intuitive. As the best skin hydration happens from the inside out, try to drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Keep a reusable water bottle on hand throughout the day as a reminder to drink. Warming mugs of herbal tea count too!
Cream Scene:
Swap light moisturizing lotion for a heavier, creamier formula. A thicker cream offers a stronger barrier against the elements and the richer emollients keep skin hydrated longer. Don’t forget to add SPF too. Sunscreen is a must all year long!
Exfoliate to Rejuvenate:
Get rid of dry, flaky skin by regularly using a gentle exfoliant. By sloughing off the dead skin cells three times a week, skin will be left more radiant and fresher. Plus, it allows for moisturizers to better penetrate the skin.
Wrap it Up:
Keep delicate skin covered up with winter accessories, including gloves and a hat. On blustery days, the wind can dry out, and even irritate, exposed skin. Wrapping our neck, chin and cheeks in a beautiful scarf is a smart and stylish way to beat the cold.
Head-to-Toe TLC:
Just because most of the body stays covered up during winter months, it’s no excuse to neglect it! The skin below the shoulders also needs creamier formulations of cleaners and moisturizers to stay supple and hydrated. Weekly exfoliation also does a body good as the temperature drops.
