Growing up as a young plus size teen, there weren’t very many “fashion” options available to me. Sure, there were a plethora of shapeless pants and grannie-worthy tops for me to choose from (since “back in the day”, it seemed that the only women plus size stores catered to were older women), but there were never any options available for women who wanted to, you know, actually dress with a sense of style.
This unfortunate state of events forced me to begin compromising my style. Since “fat girls” weren’t supposed to wear the same things thin women wore, why even bother making clothes for them? Everything was made to cover up and “hide” my body, and so, that’s what I ended up doing. I wore a lot of black (even though I love black and still wear it all the time, back then I wore it to appear as slim and inoffensive as possible). I shopped at thrift stores often, trying to work a “quirky” look by wearing vintage things I found in my size (which was very rare). Mostly, I wore baggy shirts and one pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans that I managed to magically squeeze into when I was 16. I wore them every single day from then on, until the inner thighs finally wore out. I dressed in what was available to me, and always to appease others. My style consisted of whatever I could whip up at the time. It wasn’t my own.
Today, things have finally changed. Take one look online and you’ll find an amazing plus size community, full of women flourishing in body love and self-confidence. Gone are the days when people told us that we can’t wear what we want. Instead, we’ve replaced it by saying “we will wear what we want, and we will look fabulous doing it.” Plus size fashion has evolved, along with our loud-and-proud collective voice, saying that we are confident, beautiful, and equal to everyone else (no matter what size we are)! Plus size clothing companies and brands have popped up all over the globe, making anything and everything available for you to wear. Short skirts, shorts, dresses, crop tops, bikinis, tight sexy things – everything you can think of is out there for you, and you can wear it.
The fashion barriers have been broken, ladies, and the world is ours! We now live in a time where loving your body and being body positive is all the rage, and it’s time to take our power, rights and freedom back. Now is the time to buy those clothes you have always wanted. Screw dressing how you think is “appropriate” for society, and dress to express who you really are as a woman. Style yourself the way you want. The time for compromising your style is over. It’s time to show the world that you are a strong, confident, beautiful, stylish and uncompromising woman.
