Life can get pretty difficult at times, let’s be honest. As much as we may feel like we have it “figured out” at times, there are moments where life seems so complicated that it feels like you’re lost at sea. But when this happens, all you need is a little light to show you the way.
When we were young, we had our parents to help us guide the way. They taught us how to walk, how to talk, how to feed ourselves, dress ourselves, and how to move forward and survive in this great, big world of ours. When we didn’t know something, they were there to show us. They made sure that we got up out of bed and dragged our tired-selves to school every morning. They were there to make sure we did our homework and graduated from school. They were life-mentors, and they showed us (to the best of their ability) how to succeed and survive in this life.
As wonderful as parents are, there are some things that are just out of their reach when it comes to guidance. I mean yes, my parents showed me how to “be a good and successful person” in life, but they never showed me how to be confident in myself and in my body. And really, unless you are a fellow plus size woman living in this society, you have no idea what it feels like, or the struggles we actually go through and face everyday.
As a young girl, I didn’t have anyone in my life to mentor me when I was growing up. I never encountered another plus size woman who was confident and proud of her body, who was uncompromising in her approach to life. Any fellow fat woman I met always seemed to carry the same shame, struggles, and tendency to compromise herself as I did. I had to grow up and find my own self-love and confidence the hard way: completely on my own.
But there is hope yet today for all plus size women looking for an “uncompromising mentor,” because these days, inspiration is only a click away. When it comes to finding a mentor to help guide you through your self-love and body-confidence journey, there is a place you can always go to help give you the inspiration and support you need: the internet. The internet is filled with fellow plus size women showing the world that they are beautiful, fabulous, confident, and completely uncompromising. The plus size and body positive community is absolutely flourishing and thriving online, providing us all with the strength to do the exact same thing.
As we continue to see other plus size women “just like us” being brave, bold, confident and unwavering in their life and style choices, we can begin to see that being uncompromising is possible for us, too. It has a fabulous “wave-like” effect, flowing from one woman to another. It’s time we all start mentoring each other, ladies. There is strength in numbers, after all.
