You may not be going to the Oscars, Grammy’s or one of Hollywood’s major award shows but there is always that special occasion where you need to get super glamorous and ready for your close up. After styling some of the most iconic curves in music, film and fashion for everything from live performances to red carpet appearances the one question that is most consistently asked is; How do celebrity women look so perfect from head to toe? Achieving seamless perfection for the red carpet is a process, but whether it’s your wedding day, prom or your big yearly gala you can apply some of the same tips to get gorgeous for any special occasion.
Red Carpet Rule #1 : Fit Comes First
The first step to getting red carpet ready is looking for the right gown or cocktail dress for the event. After you decide on what is most appropriate, then it is time to shop. When shopping I highly suggest that you wear or bring the undergarments that you will wear with your dress. This is important because you want to be sure that the dress fits properly and as close to the way you would want to look at the event. Also, this will help to determine if the dress needs alterations, and what needs to be done. The proper undergarments will allow you to get as close as possible to a true fit.
It is important to have a good tailor or seamstress to help you achieve that seamless red carpet moment. It may be an added expense but it is worth it. My favorite trick for evening dresses and gowns is to have the corset sewn into the dress, it helps in preventing any wardrobe malfunctions and the dress fits like it was made just for you.
Red Carpet Rule # 2 : Head for the Heels
I also suggest that you bring a pair of high heeled shoes with you while you are shopping. Bring shoes that are similar to what you would wear on your big day especially in regards to height. This is important for several reasons; it will help to determine if the length of the dress or gown is right for you, you will be more conscious of your posture and femininity in heels and lastly everything looks better when you’re wearing heels. You can ask any client, I never do fittings without heels, that is tops on my stylist list of rules. After you choose your dress and decide on what shoes you will wear, it is essential to make sure that your shoes fit properly and that they are comfortable. If the shoes are peep toe or strappy, you don’t want your toes hanging over the edge or sausage cased because they are two tight. Sometimes it’s best to go up a half size and pad your shoes for security and comfort. Lastly, if you purchase a new pair of shoes make sure that they have some traction on the bottom. If the shoes are not made with ridges on the bottom than take a scissor and create traction by making lines on the bottom of your shoes. This will prevent any slip sliding on your big day.
Red Carpet Rule # 3 : Spotlight Sparkle, Don’t Spackle.
Accessories are the finishing touch, they are meant to compliment you and gently enhance your dress. When choosing your jewelry be strategic. Go for one exquisite statement piece. For example, if you choose a large statement necklace then your earrings should be small. You always want to avoid accessory overcrowding, to keep the look classic and beautiful and never garish. You should take the same approach when choosing an evening purse. If the bag is jeweled then you want to make sure that any jewelry that you wear on your fingers or wrist is elegant yet simplistic in design because you don’t want the two to compete. You also want to be sure that the purse that you choose doesn’t have any closures or design details that could snag or rip your dress your dress.
Red Carpet Rule #4: Fix Your Fashion Finale
Lastly and most importantly after you decide on your dress and have it altered if needed, and purchase your shoes and your accessories, please do a final fitting. Check yourself out in a full mirror, and look at yourself from all angles. This final fitting will determine your hair and make-up direction and enable you to make any necessary changes. This is how you get red carpet ready………
