Mastering the red lip can seem daunting if you’re not really into make-up. Even if you consider yourself something of a make-up savant, it can still seem daunting! Do you use liner? How do you pick the right colour? How do you make it actually stay on your lips and not get all over your face? We’ve got the answers to all of these questions and more in our guide !
The 2 Minute Red Lip
Red Lip 0:00- 0:30 Prep
Prepping your lips before you begin to apply lipstick for a red lip is a very important part of the process. Think of your lips as a canvas, or if you’re not the artistic type, like a wall. You need to smooth and prep the surface before you begin to paint. Luckily you don’t need to bust out the sandpaper –Ouch!—instead use a combination of raw sugar and water to gently buff your lips. For added exfoliation, use a soft toothbrush and gently buff away chapped skin. Follow up with a moisturizing lip balm to lock in moisture.
0:30 – 1:00 Line
Don’t worry, you don’t have to line your entire lips in one fell swoop! Instead, for the perfect red lip, pick lip pencil that matches (or is a shade darker than) your lipstick and lightly sketch the outline of your lips. Gently colour in the rest of your mouth .
1:00 – 1:30 Paint
Using a lips brush, paint as close to the edge of your lips with the lipstick of your choice, or if you feel really confident, swipe the lipstick on freehand. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, a Q-tip dipped in baby oil will remove any smudges in a flash!
1:30 – 1:45 Blot + Seal
Blot your lips with blotting papers, or if you don’t have that, tissue paper works just fine. Once you’ve done that, dip a fluffy make-up brush in translucent powder and swipe once across your lips.
1:45 – 2:00 Top it Off
Finish up with a final coat of lipstick or, if you want some extra va-va-voom use a lipgloss in a matching colour to add shine. Boom! You’ve mastered the red lip in less time than it takes to boil water.
